Success ! The WD-40 did the trick. I sprayed it on the sticky residue areas and let it sit for a minute or so. Then dabbed it off with paper towels, and then rubbed and could see the residue "rolling" off. Washed the whole mat with Dawn dish soap and my mats are now like brand new. Thank you so much for the advice; hope it also helps someone else in cleaning up their mats.
