You can make the pattern as long as it's for your own use or if you're giving it as a gift -- but it's illegal to sell a quilt with that pattern. Certainly you can make a well-known block surrounded by sashings without a problem, but using someone's pattern and selling the quilt can get you in trouble.
Not quite. You can sell your work. What you can't do is copy the pattern and sell it.
