I took over the basement 8 years ago, and the lack of daylight just about drove me over the edge! :lol: BUT.... the extra space was worth the trade-off. I'd say that you should start with the largest space you can find, and everything else will fall into place from there. We recently remodeled my space, and painted it a very sunny color. The floor is just concrete, but it's painted beige, and is very easy to sweep. I also wanted space for my longarm, my Cricut machine, and my 100 inch cutting table.
