Thanks Butterflywing - I did SID down each stitch line (which are 1" apart since I used 1" logs), stopping when I ran out of ditch and starting again when the ditch re-started. To those of you who have down log cabins this may make sense - to the others it probably doesn't. Each time I started or stopped I back stitched with a small stitch length, or just started up with small stitches. This left gaps with threads that had to be frequently clipped. If you try to do a snail trail there's too much turning of the quilt. If I were good enough at free motion that might be the way to do it, but I prefer to use the walking foot.
