Thanks, everyone for your concern and great suggestions. I have an auto shut off iron that I have used in the past, just as a safeguard, but I am doing a lot of paper piecing and I am using a small Rowenta travel iron which is great for that, but doesn't cut off. Even with the auto shut off I have found myself checking and rechecking that it is off. Now I think I will try some of your advice, probably the surge protector and lamp idea. I am feeling much better now and almost back to normal, whatever that is! You really know how to help someone feel better!
