I used a light box when I was doing stained glass. I found a large drawer at a recycle place, put a fluorescent light in the bottom (screwed it in) and had a glass shop cut a sheet of 1/4" thick glass to fit on the top. That glass was too thick for me to cut. They buffed the edges so it wasn't sharp and it was so heavy it never moved around -- plus the drawer had a lip on the front that the glass butted up to.
