Was it a kit? Her fabrics have kind of like a batik finish on some of them, and I find the heat'n bond lite that I prefer doesn't work very well with them either. One way would be to appliquilt it, make your sandwich & then as another member suggested use your free motion embroidery option & just stitch about an 1/8" inside the shape. This will stop any fraying & also quilt the piece in the one step. I've used this method before & find it good for wallhangings.
