I usually do the blanket stitch too.
for the zig-zag, i would use an invisible thread, so the little colored piece isn't all covered up with thread.
That's something I was worried about! Either not being able to match the thread well, or ending up with the thread and stitching being the focal point instead of the shape underneath. Thank you :-)
