Most of the books are selvage edges, and some are fussy cut from fabrics that had writing on them. I just cut my background pieces first, then started cutting selvages and piling the books up until the shelf was full. Then I fused them onto the background. I stitched each of them in addition with (mostly) a fancy machine stitch, and at the end when I quilted just outlined them so they would puff out a little.
