How about involving her ... in both the pattern and fabric choices.
She could mean anything from a simple like a log cabin quilt to a more appliqued quilt. If she is involved she will appreciate all the work you will be putting in it even more. She'll definitely know it took more than $30 of material and only a few hours of work.
It would be a good bonding experience, too.
