hi, i think 'QAYG' really would help a lot with the actual quilting aspect in general. you won't have to 'wrestle the bear' as it were under the machine, after the the blocks have been put together.
it's been suggested that you cut your batting square slightly larger than your 4.5" 'DJ' block. then you can hand quilt the block to the batting (no backing at this point)
when you're ready, you can sash your blocks together and slip stitch the batting pieces together at the back to keep all the batting flat. eventually when all of your blocks are done you add your backing, and at this point you only need to 'SITD' down the sashing's.
i put a link a few posts ago, to 'lacelady's' 'QAYG' tutorial that she did in the previous DJ sew along last year.
take a look, it's very simple.

I am interested in knowing just how the quilt as you go is going to work. I'm thinking of quilting a couple of rows at a time and then put it together. It would have to be without the triangle edges. I guess that could also be quilted separately and attached. I'm getting ahead of myself. We haven't even started and I'm worrying about putting it together.
