Your quilt, your rules. Have you considered just making it a 9-patch with the corners and center white and the other 4 the color? As a border it would be like a dot-dash pattern in alternating colors in the three rows. With mitered corners it would work just fine. Whatever you decide will be fine...and there are no quilt police, really there aren't.
