Whether you are doing a one piece panel (as you mentioned) or a multi-piece block quilt, the batting you use will determine how far apart the quilting can be to stabilize the batt in place.
It's somewhat your choice as to how far/close you quilt. What you are working on will somewhat determine the distance, as to what looks "right" to you! And remember .... there's no rules!
