My family eats blackeyed peas but not the greens, which I think you mean turnip greens. Right? This tradition came from Alabama with my grandmother. I understand it to mean that if you are willing to start your new year off with a lowly meal of blackeyed peas then you will be willing to watch your spending for the whole year and as a result will be more economically blessed. It is supposed to be dried peas, not canned or frozen. It is all about being humble.
