I am in a guild. It started 7 years ago with just 11 members but grew rapidly. At one point a small group in the guild just hijacked everything - ("my way or the highway.") and it became very militant. Many good people dropped out.
But now it is much better. There are 75 members - enough that you can find kindred souls and good friends.
Many guild members form their own smaller groups that meet in homes every week. Those are great!
If you are a beginner or make lots of mistakes, the guild members will love you and help you!
