Here in Japan we eat ozoni (a soup made with vegetables and chicken) poured over grilled mochi (glutinous rice made into small blocks or rounds) and/or o-sekihan, azuki beans and glutinous rice steamed together and sprinkled with salt and black sesame seeds. My mother is from Texas, and you can bet she made a pot of black-eyed peas and greens-her favorite dishes!
