What is quilt soap? I always just use what ever I have. Usually Tide and I wash in cold water so far no issues except when I first start quilting ripped seams...I just fixed it last weekend after putting it in the closet for a year. I took off the binding and cut off the border which had the tear and then rebinded. Now it a small lap or kitty quilt. .

Yes I do wash it before I give it. I launder with Quilt Soap and usually include a bottle of it as a gift. I like the "crinkly" look of a quilt, plus makes it softer.
