My sewing background has been more clothing than quilting. So when I started, I pressed them open. Then I heard a teach say you MUST go to the side. So I do that now. But many of my friends still press them open and feel it is a better way to get a good, clean seam. I seem to agree. I am so glad that APQ agrees that it is not necessary now.
