find a book or magazine that shows a good feather you like-and trace it with your finger- over & over until you get the (mind-set) of the paths- and how you want to do it- tracing it with your finger first really helps- then you can just put some guide-marks on the quilt- (or free motion) them- your minds eye will have the shapes figured out .
