It gives it more stability and you don't have to pick pieces of paper out of the stitching. It gives it a nice base, just takes a little bit longer. Starching is good to help it keep its shape, too. Yes this book has an introduction and step by step photo instructions. You cut out your pieces first (which book tells you what size). Each block has a quilt with total amounts of fabrics to make. I am making the sampler quilt that is included in the book. My only problem with this book is it has been a bit tricky to copy the full size patterns so my copier does not cut off a piece of the pattern. I have read through the book and the instructions make since to me for all blocks without trying them.
