Interesting I too was told the same thing...I've always measured my cutting mats to make sure from then on and have found that the first one was fine, second way off, just pulled my third one out and it measures fine. So there you go in my experience 33% of my new mats failed to measure correctly.... I guess it is always wise not to trust the mat unless you measure it for accuracy.
