My first quilt was made of 4 inch squares alternated with plain white 4" squares that I cut from a muslin sheet bought in a thrift shop. It turned out lovely...to my eyes. I still have it and use it, sure, the squares were a little 'off' sometimes, but my family loves it. Don't worry about it being a little off, just hop in, and do it....
