Jacquie - if the spring has been snapped, but there is still plenty of coil hiding inside, unravel one round of the coil and with a pair of jewellery pliers make a new loop to take the thread. It might take a long time and a lot of quiet cussing, but I've managed it on a couple of machines before now.
