I know how you feel about a class - I started doing a Hawaiian quilt for my niece who lives in Maui. I bought two or three books on it...I agree that back basting is the way to go but you still have to cut out the pattern which is not easy. I know that "quilting University.com" has a class on Hawaiian quilting - I have not taking their class but it sounded good because you could go at your own speed.
