I don't happen to have a Singer, but have done much reading on this site as I had been trying to decide on a new machine (would like a larger harp space). I have also asked some questions here and there. My understanding is that these machines are preferred because they are solidly built and as they are not computerized, there is not a lot to go wrong with them. They seem to have an absolutely wonderful stitch that many say newer machines cannot match, and these machines are often referred to as work horses. They can be found rather inexpensively (as compared to the cost of computerized machines these days) and maintenance is easy and straight forward (oiling the machine regularly, cleaning out lint - etc).
