P.S. It helps to sew slower like you stated, but then train your eye to sew ahead of the needle. Then, when you get within a few stitches of the pin, take the pin out. If you are right handed, pin to the right so you are pulling it out with your right hand. Left-handed, pin on the left. There should be enough pressure from the foot to hold the fabric that you no longer need that pin. You do this often enough you will be 'trained' to do it without thinking about it. Hopefully. Not good to sew over pins. For the machine or your eyes.
