I've tried these devices and the problem I have is that every time I have to change the bobbin I have to lift the tape, metallic credit card, pack of post-its or whatever, and then reset it and check my seam allowance again. I use my 1/4" foot and the line at the front of the throat plate which causes the fabric to go through very straight, so I am not having to eyeball the needle area every second. I do not use the stop-and-start button, just the foot pedal. I try to remember to keep the machine running in needle-down position so if I stop to straighten a seam or whatever I don't pull the fabric out of position. I also don't sew too slow as I am twitchy and tend to 'oversteer' the fabric.
I hope someday to have a better feel for the material and the machine. Onward and upward!
