All sewing machines have to have some sort of "box or table" to fit into--even the brand new ones (the new ones have their case permanently attached as one piece). The gentleman was correct, without a box or table to surround/encase it, the "inner workings" can't move and the machine will not sit level. Some vintage machines are sold as the "head only" which means that either the case or table that originally came with it was too badly damaged or sold separately. You can usually buy cases/tables to fit the machine on ebay. This is true for all vintage machines. As far as the foot/knee pedal goes--if the machine was originally in a table the knee pedal is just a lever that presses on the foot pedal that's anchored to the inside of the table. I believe most models it can be unscrewed and used as a foot pedal. I say most models because I have an old 66 where it seems the foot pedal is extra long and the cord too short to reach the floor so I'm thinking it was meant to be a knee press only but I love it because I learned on a machine with a knee press and am loving it!
