We use a thin strip too, only we just put two holes in it and use these nail-type art hangers (they are brass, have a thin finishing nail type head, and a little brass washer - they sit at a slight angle, you hammer it into the wall so the washer is flush with the wall and the nail hangs at a slight angle up. You slide the wood trim onto the nails with the pre-made holes and voila! Hanging away, reasonably secure (I can't say I have never knocked one off the wall) and they hang quite flat if done correctly.
