Although other programs are available, you can do plenty with EQ itself. Usually the other programs are specific block or quilt designs or quilting stencils. For example, I'm thinking of getting some of the Quiltmaker quilting stencil add ons. They can be used in EQ so you can preview the stencil design on your quilt. But they can also be used alone. I'm just looking for stencils that I can print out to use for FMQ. You can also download fabrics from places like Moda and Connecting Threads so you can put these into your design and get a better idea what your finished quilt will look like. Although I usually just find a color or fabric that pretty closely matches what I have and go with that.
In short - EQ by itself will keep you busy for a long time.
