thanks all for the kind words. this is really a very simple quilt block. i found it in a quilt book called LICKETY-SPLIT QUILTS FOR LITTLE ONES. written by laurie bevan.
this block is really just another variation of the old favorite log cabin only you add the strips counter clock wise and stop after the first round. the name of the block was given as WEB.
as far as the set in seam, there isn't one. just cut the center fabric the size square that you want, then cut off the corners. sort of like you were going to make snowballs. start by sewing the strip across the top, but when you have sewn half way across just stop and lengthen the seam. trim only the left side and add the next strip on that left side. trim and continue to add alternating strips until you get back to the final strip. at this point just unsew half the first strip and after sewing on the last strip finish by resewing that first strip at the shorter stitch length. after all the blocks are finished to this point add corner triangles.
this is just a backwards log cabin assembly and is very simple. i am toying with the idea of adding another round of strips. just to see what it would look like.
