Here is my tip, don't try keeping the lines square based on the previous line. They will tend to wander. Istead make evenly spaced tic marks along the edge of the quilt and connect them. If keeping a true 45 degrees in two directions is a challenge, try the hanging diamonds pattern. It is marked on one diagonal and the vertical.
