Seems like it might be easier to know how much thread is on a spool (how long) and then, over time, how spools of thread you've used up.

But that is a good question, because different thread has different thicknesses. But it might give you a ballpark figure. I think I have some spools that hold 5000 yards or 5000 meters. So that would be between 2- 3 miles, right? If I use it up, then, I can make a reasonable guesstimate of how much I've sewn.
