I think what happened is this: The seam that "blew out" is cut on the bias. I'm thinking that I didn't have a full 1/4" seam at that spot so when it went through the washer, stress was put on the seam and the weave just let go.

I have pulled out the quilting and the damaged portion (the red swirl and white piece) and I also ripped out extra stitches on each side of this area. I think I will be able to sew the bias seam on the sewing machine. Then I believe that I will have to hand sew the other three sides. Will let you know how it goes!!
