I mostly hand-quilt-that is how I was taught about 18 years ago-but I would never do it for anyone else because it takes so long and would keep me from doing my own (I tend to work on only one project until the last stitch is sewn on the binding!). Machine quilting is quicker, and therefore, the rate per hour/per inch makes sense-you can get a bed-sized quilt done from between $100.00 for simple meandering, to $200.00 for custom quilting. There maybe people there who just want to hand-quilt (which was me many years ago-hated cutting and piecing), but doing it for someone would cost too much if paying by the hour or inch. They would be doing it for the love of it. Just my opinion-----
