You can use old jeans in the center and that frays real good, but it will be heavy and really warm.. Another thought would be old cotton t shirts. It wouldn't be as heavy as the denim. these are just thoughts. I'm sure whatever you decide to do your quilt will be very nice and comphy. I have used old jeans in the middle for warmth and flannel on the bottom to make it soft and comfy it ragged out, felt and looked good i washed the flannel a couple times 1st
I would NOT use any thing that could be washed .... How are you going to get it rag out without washing ??
