I disagree. I think "Free Motion" refers more to the fact that the machine is not controlling the movement of the fabric, the sewer is. Free Motion quilting doesn't describe how the pattern was transferred to the quilt (with or without design aids), only the fact that 100% of the motion to create it was controlled by the quilter.

I would not consider the use of one of those panto boards to be "free motion" for example, because the board is controlling the motion of the machine.
