As others have suggested the vine pieces are cut on the bias. The bias bars will give you nice even pieces to work with. I used lots of pins for my last applique vines but after QB I might try washable glue instead. You have to do the inside curves first as others have said and coax the outside edges to stretch and lay flat. It is a bit tricky but with the bias strips it does work.
