I agree, remove the border. Then cut your white square down to 5.5 inches I would cut the new border at 1.0 inch. Once sewn on it should equal 6.5 inches. No trimming required.
Rethink that advice. I think people are getting confused with unfinished & finished sizes. Big Difference !
