Thanks Nancy & Katybob - that was exactly what I meant
just bear in mind that in katybob's sketch with the corners consider it piecing, not necessarily paper piecing in that for the corners - sew 1 to 2 and 3 to 4, then sew 1-2 to piece 3-4. If you try to PP in the 1-4 order you will run into problems!
