If everything was working fine, you didn't have tension problems, you didn't change anything, and the tension suddenly goes bad - then it probably isn't the tension setting on the machine. More likely the thread path is not right somehow, e.g. the thread jumped out of where it should be and wrapped itself around something else, or there's a foreign object such as lint in the way.
