How about the technique of sewing these crumbs on to a 6" pre cut sq.(or any sz. you want) out of muslin. This tech. you start in the middle.Then trim it to sz. there would be pc. hanging out all over. Is this the same general idea ?? I know this is a different process but the crumbs would still get used. Just a thought.

Yes in my opinion. Really it looks just like a 'crazy quilt' patch only using much smaller pieces of fabric. If I did make a small one I would definitely use muslin and/or paper as a foundation in order to eliminate stretching.
