From what I've read people in the NE USA make a lot more money that many other parts of the US. So, for people from your part of the US to pay that much results in a lot fewer sacrifices than someone say, from TX or FL to pay that much for fabric.
As a 12th generation New Englander, I find this statement incredibly offensive. Salaries, for some, are higher here for the very simple reason that the cost of living is much higher...and I'm talking about the basic costs of living (food, clothing, shelter, utilities, health care), not the fluff like fabric. You've made a very broad generalization about millions of US citizens all based on something you read somewhere...there's a name for that and it's not very pretty.
