Take the machine out on a warm sunny day to work on it. That metal bar that you are referring to, is that the bar for the shuttle( bobbin area)? Sometimes that area is difficult to open. Oil it up well and let the oil seep into the grooves while the machine sits out in the sun. The heat from the sun and the oil should help with getting that plate to slide.
Same goes for any other parts or screw that you are trying to get loose. Just clean her up with sewing oil! Enjoy!
