I know my doctor would kill me for saying this, but eat what you want - in moderation.

I would have slit my wrists years ago if I'd had to have followed all the diet tips and restrictions that you'll get.

I'm 'assuming' you're Type II (adult onset)?

I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic since 1994 with glucose intolerance preceding that so I have a bit of experience...

Diabetes is NOT a death sentence - manage it as a chronic condition and you'll be fine.

DO monitor your blood sugars (some of the new meters use 'alternate site testing' when some say is 'painless' - I'm pretty old school and still do the finger pricks. Since I have to inject insulin (Lantus) anyway, the finger pricks seem inconsequential...)

oops...sorry...shouldn't have gone into 'preaching' mode...

But - seriously - don't obsess about it and live life normally...
