I suppose the size of the template is the measurements of the lenght and width of it? I cut the strips at 4 and 3/4 on the lenght of grain. You then stack up 4 strips, all right sides up, use the micro pen to trace around the template and cut out with the rotary cutter and ruler, turning the strips as needed. I used scraps so the strips weren't that long. If you are using yardage, you can control how long you make the strips. I usually cut a half yard off and cut the stips on the lenght of grain.
You do not have to make up a square as you are cutting the exact patch and it goes fast to sew them up....no waste and saved sewing time.
