Since Kay prepared the shirts and pieced the top I don't know how she made the borders. But here is how I would have done it.
1.After cutting the sleeves and backs from the front of the shirts, button the shirt fronts and trim 1/2 inch on either side of the placket. Set aside the buttoned plackets for use in the borders.
2. After the quilt body has been pieced, measure for the border lengths. Sew the plackets together to fit the borders, use some spacing fabric between the ends of the plackets if needed to get the correct lengths. Attach the border plackets to the quilt body as you would any other borders. Quilt and bind as usual.
