Sorry for your family's loss. How about bonding the t-shirt pieces to the scrub pieces (leaving the seam allowance unbonded) and make a rag quilt. Another would be what I call a fake cathedral window, where you cut circles from the scrub material and squares of flannel or thin batting and squares of the t-shirt and center the squares in the middle of the circle and fold over the side of the circle pieces and stitch down. I don't know the name of the pattern but someone on the board will, I'm sure. If you use that method it would be quilted when you got it together. I wish I could be more help. I'm sure the boys will appreciate whatever you come up with. That would be a great memory item for them. Use the search and check out the quilt as you go patterns. That may be where I saw it.
