The charm and advantage of the log cabin block is it's ability to be turned on all sides to allow the overall pattern to be modified i.e. all sevens, or barn raising, or rows and furrows... hence the squares should be that, square, to allow for the rotation of the block that allows these patterns to be assembled.

Dunster... now ya done it. now i have to go find fabric and make me one like your EQ6 example. All my log cabins have been equal and square. I am going to have to do an size unequal, color unbalanced set of quilt blocks to see if I can come up with something that looks like yours.
