I got it to work. First I stood up, looking down on the top. I tied the first knot, left over right. Then I followed the instructions here:
http://sewing.about.com/od/bowsandri.../ss/tiebow.htm I tied right loop over left and it worked. For the wedding question, this site has several other bows demonstrated as well.
